Ennodius of Pavia

Magnus Felix Ennodius

bishop|473-521 AD|Pavia
Magnus Felix Ennodius (c. 473/4-521) was a Gallo-Roman aristocrat, rhetorician, and poet who became bishop of Ticinum (modern Pavia) in northern Italy under Ostrogothic rule. Raised in the circles of Liguria and educated in the classical rhetorical tradition, he served as a deacon at Milan before his episcopal appointment, and his vast surviving output, nearly 300 letters along with panegyrics, saints' lives, poems, and rhetorical exercises (dictiones), is one of the richest windows we have into the literary and ecclesiastical culture of Theoderic's Italy. He is best known for his Panegyric on Theoderic and for championing the cause of Pope Symmachus during the Laurentian schism, defending the principle that the bishop of Rome could not be judged by any earthly tribunal. Ennodius matters as a bridge figure: a custodian of late Roman rhetorical learning who deployed it in the service of the post-imperial Catholic Church.
