To Leontius. (357/58) Your governor is a companion of mine, and I have firmly believed that the office will be a gain for you all, and a glory both for me and for him. The other advantages, then, you will gain along with the rest, but in these matters you will have the greater share, whenever he pursues your speeches. For what he himself loves, this is found with you-fountains of eloquence; and what you have need of, this is found with him-judgment in listening, joined with knowledge. Make use, therefore, of the favorable wind, and spread the sails of your ship, or, if you prefer, the wings of the swan.
