"peruenire" [to arrive]: the manuscript reads "pernire." "sumministret" [let him supply] - or is this perhaps the correct reading? In D, line 2, "set" (as is customary); line 5, "dignamini" [you (pl.) deign] in Dj; line 6, "fultus" [supported]: from "fultis" in Di; lines 6-7, read as it appears; restore the ending. [Editorial note on the heading:] Heading, "To John, Count of the Patrimony": Compare the remarks made on the heading of Letter 38, page 109. [Note 1:] "And so your Glory": John was for this reason of illustrious rank, whether placed in active office or among those serving. Compare the notes on Letters 20.1 and 53.5, pages 62 and 141; M. "To the presbyter Luminosus": Concerning whom mention is made in the preceding Letter 61, which appears to have been issued on the same day. "the aforesaid journey": namely, the one that led through Venetia and Liguria. Compare Letter 61, page 162. From this it can be inferred that Luminosus had to meet with John before the presbyter reached the aforesaid regions, for the pope was requesting John's assistance so that Luminosus might safely enter within the territory of the schismatics. It is therefore confirmed that our John was residing at Ravenna. Compare the notes on the heading of Letter 38, page 109. [Note 2:] "there ... so that even there": An argument for the other interpretation proposed, namely that John was residing neither in Venetia nor in the regions of Liguria.
