Letter 776

To Eutychius the Deacon. There is need of much striving, and of sufficient care, and of sober, undistracted prayer, in order to seek out and discover that undisturbed condition of the mind in which the Master is said to dwell, as the Apostle [Paul] says: "Or do you not recognize that Jesus Christ dwells in you?" [2 Corinthians 13:5]. For there, in truth, there exists a certain other heaven within the heart, kindled by divine grace alone as by a beacon-fire, in a certain peace that is beyond interpreting and beyond all telling.

Ἀγῶνος πολλοῦ χρεία, καὶ φροντίδος ἱκανῆς, καὶ προσευχῆς νηφούσης καὶ ἀρέμβου, πρὸς τὸ ζητῆσαι καὶ ἐξευρεῖν τὴν ἀπαρενόχλητον τῆς διανοίας κατά- στασιν, ἔνθα οἰκεῖ λέγεται ὁ Δεσπότης, ὥς φησιν ὁ Ἀπόστολος· « Ἡ οὐκ ἐπιγινώσκετε, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς Χρι- στὸς οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν; » Ἐκεῖ γὰρ ὡς ἀληθῶς ὑπάρχει ἕτερός τις ἐγκάρδιος οὐρανὸς ἀπὸ τῆς θείας μόνης φρυκτωρουμένος χάριτος ἐν εἰρήνῃ τινὶ ἀνερμη- νεύτῳ καὶ ἀνεκδιηγήτῳ.
