Letter 158

To the Same Person. For this reason God has set the Churches everywhere, like so many harbors in the open sea, so that, as far as may be, fleeing the brine and the storm of the cares of this life, and sailing in to port here, we may enjoy a saving calm and great gladness.

Διὰ τοῦτο ὥσπερ τινὰς λιμένας ἐν πελάγει πανταχοῦ τὰς Ἐκκλησίας ὁ Θεὸς ἔπηξεν, ἵνα καθ’ ὅσον ἐγχωρεῖ, φεύγων τὴν τῶν βιωτικῶν φροντίδων ἄλμην, καὶ ζάλην, κἀνταῦθα καταπλέοντες ἀπολαύωμεν γαλήνης σωτηρίου, καὶ πολλῆς εὐφροσύνης.
