Pelagius [the Pope] to Constantine the defensor [a lay legal agent of the Church]. Romanus, a cleric of the church of Theanum, on account of the crime of adultery which he is reported to have committed, has been deposed from the order of the clergy and, by our command, confined in a monastery, here in the city of Rome, to perform penance; so that, if at any time he should attempt to depart from there and return to Campania, he is to undergo the penalty which has now been tempered by ecclesiastical moderation, and without doubt to suffer exile.
