[This record contains the surviving fragments of two letters of Pope Pelagius I, ep. 39 and ep. 40, embedded among the editor's critical apparatus. Only the genuine letter content is translated below; the Latin scholarly notes and variant readings are not part of the letters themselves.] [From Letter 39, to a bishop (the manuscript heading reads "Pelagius to John the count," but the editor judges this an erroneous repetition of the preceding letter's heading, since the recipient is plainly a bishop who had withdrawn from the apostolic sees; only the fragment of sections 2 through 4 survives, and the text is defective in places):] ...founded, and so the foundation, that the gates of hell cannot prevail against it? But if you had read this, where, apart from him, did you (3) believe the Church to be -- in whom alone, that is, all the apostolic sees exist, to whom likewise, just as to that man who had received the keys, the power of binding and loosing has been granted? But for this reason he gave first to one what (4) he was going to give, and then gave it [in] all as well, so that, according to the opinion of the blessed Cyprian the martyr who sets forth this very point, the Church may be shown to be one. Where then were you straying, most dear one -- now indeed in Christ -- divided from her, or what hope of your salvation were you holding? [The text appears mutilated here, as frequently elsewhere.] [From Letter 40 (J-E 999), early to mid-March, A.D. 559: yielding to the wishes of Andreas and Iohanna, Pelagius asks the bishops Amabilis and Leontius to be willing to protect them.] <Pelagius> to the bishops Amabilis and Leontius. Andreas and Iohanna, by a petition (1) presented to us which is contained in [in] what follows below, request to be fortified by the authority of ecclesiastical protection -- with justice, however, preserved -- and they desire that this be done through your charity, in whose dioceses also they relate that they dwell. Therefore let your fraternity, (2) having taken up the present authority, not delay to extend to them ecclesiastical protection, with justice preserved in all things, especially because they complain that an unjust suit is being stirred up against them concerning their status; in which affairs the protection of ecclesiastical mercy is accustomed and ought to be commended. [Andreas and Iohanna, distinguished by no title, were apparently servants, as the context of the letter suggests, for they had suffered an injustice regarding their status. The episcopal sees of Amabilis and Leontius are unknown.] [Heading of the following letter, ep. 41:] PEvAGIUS I PAPAE [Of Pope Pelagius I]. He orders the defensor John to deprive Secundus, bishop of Tauromenium [Taormina], of the use of the pallium, and, once the Paschal feast has been completed, to send him to the pontiff.
