Pelagius to Cero of Narni. Inasmuch as our brother and fellow bishop John, prompted by his zeal for the welfare of the Church and acting upon a praiseworthy estimate, formed in the simplicity of his own nature, on this account, namely that he confesses himself to be by no means fit either for bearing the charge of administering the patrimony or for preserving ecclesiastical discipline, has asked that the priest Constitutus be brought in for the discharging of these matters for him, so that, by competent oversight ordering the things which are necessary, nothing unseemly or useless may be permitted to be done. And therefore by the present command we charge you that, the reverence first of all being preserved toward the aforesaid bishop, which it befits us to display toward him blamelessly, in all matters which either pertain to the service of divine worship, or which the care of carrying out the welfare of the Church shall have advised, you render due obedience, in nothing resisting his arrangements with a contumacious spirit; nay rather, fulfilling with the zeal of your competent watchfulness those things which he shall have admonished to be done for the welfare of the Church, so that, these things being thus ordered, both the customary stipends may be ministered to you, and whatever things are necessary for reclaiming the property within the aforesaid patrimony of the Church, or concerning the goods belonging to it, may be accomplished.
