To Cyril. (362) Eutropius, who is on his way to you, knows well that he will find you a friend and ready to help him, since he knows how great his uncle stands in your esteem; but, wishing that the favor which you are about to grant to that man should be granted to both of us, to me as well as to him, he came after receiving a letter from me. It is clear, therefore, that he is striving in every way to support your reputation through the very means by which he makes two men, instead of one, indebted to you for your kindness. So whenever you repay this man with many and great benefits, instruct me by writing of your acts of generosity, so that he may profit in deed, while the pleasure may be shared by both Eutropius and myself.

Κυρίλλῳ. (362) οἶδε μὲν παρὰ φίλον σε καὶ πρόθυμον εἰς αὑτὸν ἐσό- μένον ἥξων Εὐτρόπιος εἰδώς, ἡλίκος ἐστὶν ὁ θεῖος αὑτοῦ παρὰ σοί· βουλόμενος δέ σε τὴν χάριν, ἣν μέλλεις ἐκείνῳ δώσειν, δοῦναι ταύτην ἀμφοτέροις, ἐμοί τε κἀκείνῳ, γράμματα λαβὼν ἧκεν ἐμά. δῆλος οὖν ἐστι πάντα τρόπον τῇ σῇ συναγωνι- ούμενος δόξῃ δι’ ὧν δύ’ ἀνθ’ ἑνὸς ὑπευθύνους σοι καθίστησι χάριτος. ὅταν οὖν τοῦτον ἀμείψῃ πολλοῖς τε καὶ μεγάλοις, δίδασκέ με τὰς εὐεργεσίας γράφων, ἕν’ οὗτος μὲν ἔργῳ κερ- δαίνῃ, τὸ δὲ ἥδεσθαι κοινὸν Εὐτροπίου τε ᾖ καὶ ἐμοῦ.
