Letter 313: This Rhetorius was our student, while I attended his father's classes.

This Rhetorius was a companion of ours, while I used to attend upon this man's father; and through that man it came about that I came to know the poets, and through me he came to know the orators. He knows what I am with regard to you, and what you are toward me; for he shared in the studies I pursued in Bithynia, and in general makes it his concern to be ignorant of nothing that is mine. He is going to Egypt to take possession of a not very large ancestral plot of land, for his father was from there; or rather, in a way, he was prompted to make the journey by the fact that Palestine is being governed by you. Since you would gladly have looked upon him as our pupil even on other grounds, where will you rank him now that he is brought to you by a letter of ours?

Κληματίῳ (357) ητόριος οὗτος ἡμῖν ὡμίλησεν, ἐγὼ δὲ ἐφοίτων ὡς τὸν τοῦδε πατέρα, καὶ γέγονεν ἐμοὶ μὲν δι’ ἐκείνου γνῶναι τοὺς ποιητάς, τούτῳ δὲ δι’ ἐμοῦ τοὺς ῥήτορας. ἐπίσταται δέ, τίς μὲν ἐγὼ περὶ σέ, τίς δὲ σὺ πρὸς ἐμέ καὶ γὰρ τῶν ἐν Βιθυνίᾳ κεκοινώνηκέ μοι διατριβῶν καὶ ὅλως ποιεῖται λόγον τοῦ μη- δὲν τῶν ἐμῶν ἀγνοεῖν. οὗτος ἐπ’ Αἰγύπτου πάρεισι γῆν οὐ πολλήν τινα πατρῴαν παραληψόμενος, ἐκεῖθεν γὰρ ὁ πα- τὴρ αὐτῷ, μᾶλλον δέ πως εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν παρεκλήθη τῷ τὴν Παλαιστίνην ὑπὸ σοῦ διοικεῖσθαι. ὃν δὲ καὶ ἄλλως ἀκού- σας ἡμέτερον εἶναι μαθητὴν ἡδέως ἂν εἶδες, ποῦ τάξεις ὑφ’ ἡμετέρων σοι προσαγόμενον γραμμάτων;
