To Bassianus. (359/60?) I knew that you would do these very things which you are now doing, and that you would write not badly. For your goodness had shone forth long ago, and you were learning to write letters. But now that the occasion for both deeds and words has come, how were you going to treat us either with silence or with negligence? So continue in these things, and do not be unmindful of the labors that the noble Cleobulus expended on your behalf; for I, taking you over when you were already stirring your wings, was of help to you, while he has become a Phoenix to you. And this very thing too is yours, to know the affairs of the Phoenix from Cleobulus. Repay him with kindness in return, if you are able; but before the power to do so, pray that you may receive power to act.
