Letter 450: Your letter reached me, and I read it with care.

The writing on the board [the titulus, the inscription Pilate set over the cross], which Pilate fixed above the Lord's head, fulfilled the saying of the Lord, who declared, "When I am lifted up, I shall draw all men to myself" [John 12:32]. The reading there made plain, therefore, that the saving Passion came to pass not for Judaea alone, but also for every Greek and barbarian.

Περὶ τοῦ ἐπισθέντος τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Δεσπότου τίτλου. Ἡ τῆς σανίδος (76) γραφή, ἣν Μιλᾶτος πρὸ τῆς Κυριακῆς ἔπηξε κεφαλῆς, τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἐπλήρου φωνὴν, ἐ «Ἐπειδὰν ὑψωθῶ, λέγοντος, πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν.» Ἐδήλου τοίνυν ἡ ἐκεῖθεν ἀνάγνωσις, οὐχ ὑπὲρ Ἰουδαίας μόνης, ἀλλὰ καὶ πάσης Ἕλληνος καὶ βαρβάρου γεγενῆσθαι τὸ σωτήριον πάθος.
