Innocent to Alexander, bishop of Antioch. Concerning peace. Innocent attests, by means of the proceedings that were sent, that the embassy directed to him by Alexander, bishop of Antioch, had been most welcome to him. Innocent to Bishop Alexander. How welcome to us, how pious, how necessary the embassy was that was directed to us from your holiness, most dear brother, you will learn from the reading-back of the proceedings themselves. For our fellow-presbyter Cassian wished that this little page of our friendships should, through our fellow-presbyter Paul, the deacon Nicolaus, and the subdeacon Peter, our sons, as it were as first[fruits] [...] we have reviewed, and we have perceived that, with all contention set aside, you cherish even the late-received grace of peace; thence we have transmitted these [letters], to be returned by you to our most excellent brother and fellow-bishop Alexander, for your unanimity: namely, that if all enmity, all rivalry, both concerning the name of Saint John, that admirable bishop, and concerning all the partakers of that same communion, has departed from your animosity, you should receive these letters of our fellowship, most dear brother; provided only that all the things which have been confirmed by these proceedings you confess with your own mouth before our beloved mediator Alexander, as befits one in communion. For just as this cause of unanimity and charity is venerable to us, so it clings to us with anxiety, lest anything crooked or left-over should be known to reside in anyone. [...] of our peace to be written down. And so I greet both your brotherhood in Christ toward me, and all that church which feels so well together with you. And I ask that you, as you are doing, both address us more frequently with letters, and more often gladden us concerning your welfare. For the Lord will grant, as I am confident, that we recompense the losses of all the past time with the most loving converse of letters.
