A copy of the report of the least of the archimandrites and of the other monks of Syria Secunda. To the most holy and most blessed father of the whole world, the patriarch Hormisdas, who holds the see of Peter, the chief of the apostles: the entreaty and supplication of the least of the archimandrites and of the other monks of your province of Syria Secunda. The grace of Christ, the savior of us all, has put it into our hearts to take refuge with your blessedness, as though fleeing from winter and tempest to a tranquil harbor; and, thus forewarned, we now believe that we are held by no means hemmed in by the calamities surrounding us. For although we suffer, we endure rejoicing, knowing that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy of the future glory which shall be revealed in us. And since Christ our God has appointed a chief of the shepherds, and a teacher, and a physician of souls, it is fitting that we set forth to your holy angel [bishop] the sufferings that have befallen us, and that we point out the merciless wolves who scatter the flock of Christ, so that with the staff of his authority he may drive them out from among the sheep, and with the word of doctrine may heal the soul and soothe it with the remedies of prayer. But who these men are, and who has armed them against us, you have surely heard, most blessed one: that Severus and that Peter, who have never been reckoned in the number of Christians, who day after day assail with public anathema the holy Council of Chalcedon and our most holy and most blessed father Leo; who, esteeming the judgment of God as nothing and trampling underfoot the venerable canons of the holy fathers, by sovereign power compelled the bishops indeed to be produced and forced us to mock the aforesaid holy council, afflicting us with unspeakable torments. Whence certain of our number, unable to bear the blows inflicted upon them, departed this life, and indeed no small multitude of our people was slain. For as we were going to the monastery of the lord Simeon on a matter concerning the church, those defiled men, as we have said, laid an ambush for us along the way, and falling upon us they killed three hundred and fifty of our men, and wounded some others; and others, who were able to flee to the holy altars, they slew there on the spot, and they set fire to the monasteries, sending in by night a multitude of disorderly men, and through such pestilential men consuming all the poor property of the church, both that which had been redeemed and the rest. As to the details, the letters conveyed by the venerable brothers John and Sergius, whom we had sent to Constantinople in the belief that vengeance would be taken for the deeds that had been committed, will instruct your blessedness. But he [the emperor] did not deign even to give them a word; rather, he even drove them out with great insult, threatening them should they present these matters. Whence it is now, even if late, that we recognize that the whole wickedness and audacity of such evils committed against the churches was contrived at his instigation. We therefore beseech you, most blessed one, supplicating and entreating that you rise up with fervor and zeal, and that you justly grieve together with us for the body that has been torn (for you are the head of all), and that you avenge the faith that has been despised, the canons that have been trampled, the fathers that have been blasphemed, and such a council that has been assailed with anathema. To you the power and authority has been given by God to bind and to loose. They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick. Rise up, holy fathers, coming to save the sound! Be imitators of the Lord Christ, who came down from heaven upon the earth to seek the wandering sheep; of Peter, that chief of the apostles, whose see you adorn; and of Paul, who is the vessel of election, who going about the world gave it light. For great wounds need greater aids. Hireling shepherds, seeing wolves coming against the sheep, will let them be scattered by them; but to you, the true shepherds and teachers, to whom the care for the salvation of the sheep has been committed, the flock itself runs, recognizing its shepherd, delivered from the most savage beasts and following the voice of its shepherd, as the Lord says: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. Do not therefore despise us, most holy ones, who are daily wounded by ferocious beasts. And for the complete information of your holy angel, we anathematize in this our entreaty, which holds force, all the documents cast out and excommunicated by your apostolic see: namely we name Nestorius, who was bishop of Constantinople, Eutyches, Dioscorus, and Peter of Alexandria, who was surnamed the Stammerer, and Peter, who was called the Fuller, of Antioch, and no less Acacius, who was bishop of Constantinople, their associate in communion, and all who defend any one of those heretics. Upon reading the letter of your beloved selves, in which the madness of the enemies of God has been laid bare and the stubborn fury of the unfaithful sorrowfully set forth, who, while with reviving spirit they hate the Lord, impiously persecute his members: so far as concerns the recognition of your steadfastness, I have blessed God, who preserves the faith of his soldiers amid adversities. But again, considering the shaking of the churches and the troubles and labors of the servants of God, I have, with the prophet aiding my groanings, cried out: Arise, O Lord; judge your own cause; be mindful of the reproaches against you, of those things which are done by the foolish all the day long! gladly adding also those things which follow: Forget not the voice of those that seek you; the pride of those who hate you ascends ever up to you. For as it behooves us to guard the steadfastness of the faith, so it is not fitting to distrust the equity of the divine judgment. This is no new labor for the church, brothers, and yet, while it is humbled, it is raised up, and through those very things by which it is believed to be worn away, it is enriched by its losses.
