Gregory, recommending Eudoxius the Rhetorician.
To honor one's mother is a sacred duty. Different people have different mothers, but the common mother of us all is our homeland. This mother you have honored by the distinction of your whole life, and you will honor her again now by granting what I ask.
You certainly know Eudoxius the Rhetorician, the most learned of her sons. His son -- to put the matter briefly -- needs your assistance. I commend him to you warmly, trusting that a man who has honored our common country so generously will not refuse this request from one of her devoted sons.
