Januaria, a devout woman, has suggested to us by a petitionary representation what is contained below: that on the Furian estate, which is under her own right, she has, out of her own devotion, founded an oratory, which she desires to have consecrated in honor of Saint Severinus the confessor and Saint Juliana the martyr. And therefore, most dear brother, if the aforesaid construction lawfully stands within your parish, and it is established that no body has been buried there, then, the lawful endowment having first been received -- that is, in revenue ten solidi free from the fiscal tributes, bound by the municipal records -- you shall solemnly consecrate the aforesaid oratory without public masses; in such a way that in that same place neither in future times shall a baptistery be built, nor shall you appoint a cardinal presbyter there. But if the aforesaid foundress should perhaps wish masses to be performed there, let her know that a presbyter is to be requested from your charity, so that nothing of the kind may in any way be presumed by any other priest whatsoever. The sanctuaries [holy relics] you have received you shall set in place with reverence. [Note: in this petition we ought to have directed that free persons be granted from the (tribute)... We have taken care that your petition be carried into effect. Therefore let your Fraternity not delay to investigate, with your accustomed diligence, in what manner -- in the places where they are to be deposited -- the lights and the sustenance of those serving there ought to be furnished before the dedication of the place itself; and then in those same places let the consecrated sanctuaries be set up with reverence, lest the places dedicated to God, if the aforesaid provision is now omitted, be found in future times -- which God forbid -- destitute of the services of those who minister there.] EPISTLE 87.
