To Peter the Subdeacon. What he ought to give for the celebration of a dedication, to be distributed to the poor. Gregory to Peter the Subdeacon. [Incipit:] Earnestly devoting ourselves to the festivals of the saints [...]. [The following passage belongs to a separate letter (Epistle 59 of Book 1, indiction 9) concatenated here in the source:] We have been informed by the letter of your Fraternity that, in the matter of the person of Celestinus, certain men have consented to his election to the episcopate; and since we do not grant this, they ought not to linger upon his person. But proclaim to the inhabitants of that same city that, if within the same Church they should find a man worthy for this office, they should turn aside to the election of that very man. Otherwise, the bearer of the present letter will point out to you the person of whom we have spoken to him, in whose election the decree ought to be made. For you yourselves are to be in attendance for the visitation of that same Church, diligent and careful, so that both its property may be preserved unimpaired, and its affairs may be carried out in the customary manner with you ordering them. [The letter to Peter resumes:] We have judged it necessary to direct the page of our present instruction to your Experience, informing you that we have arranged, in the month of August, with the Lord's help, to have most earnestly dedicated the oratory of blessed Mary which was lately built in the cell of the brethren, where the abbot Marinianus is known to preside, so that our designs, with the Lord working, may be brought to completion. But because the slenderness of that same cell requires that we ourselves should gather there on the festival day itself, therefore we wish that, for the celebration of the dedication, you should give for distribution to the poor ten solidi in gold, thirty amphorae of wine, two hundred lambs, two orcae of oil, twelve wethers, one hundred hens, which afterward can be charged to your accounts. Therefore arrange that these things be done at once, with no interposition of delay, so that our vows, with God as their author, may obtain a speedy effect.
