Letter 10059: **From:** Gregory I, Bishop of Rome

To the bishops John and Fortunatus, and to Anthemius the subdeacon. What it befits us to bestow upon our sons of our own accord, we ought not to deny them when they ask it. And therefore, since our son the glorious Gregory, the former prefect, has earnestly sought to have commended to your Fraternity by us the possessions which he holds in those parts, as well as his men, we exhort you by these present letters that you ought, with due regard for what is right, to assist in furthering his interests and to protect his possessions and his men, as he desires; and you are not to allow them to be harassed by any persons whatsoever contrary to justice, nor suffer them to be oppressed. Rather, act in such a way that by your protection you may be able to make up for the presence of our aforesaid son [...], because he has so conducted himself well toward all, as you know, that he deserves to have every comfort.
