Letter 10041: Charges have been made against a man named Ilatus.

To Anthemius, Subdeacon. [Heading: That he investigate most diligently, together with Bishop Fortunatus, the truth of the charge brought against Peter.] Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon of Campania. Peter, a clerk, the bearer of these presents, has complained to us that he has been falsely accused by certain boys, and that his case has not, as it ought to have been, examined with strict scrutiny, and that he has not been condemned by anyone, but has only been forbidden by his own bishop to presume to take part in the service together with him. On hearing this we were exceedingly grieved, because, the truth having been subtly searched out, the bishop ought either to have condemned the accused, as the nature of the case demanded, or else certainly to have absolved the innocent man. Since therefore both the case requires it, and the aforesaid bearer earnestly entreats that a careful investigation be held concerning this matter, we charge you by our present authority that, together with our most reverend brother and fellow-bishop Fortunatus, and, if it seems good to you, with our glorious son Maurentius, you take pains to learn the truth of the alleged charge by a most subtle inquiry and examination; and that you so either punish the fault or hasten to relieve the innocence, that neither may you appear to have been negligent in any respect, nor may this case remain any longer without a determination.
