Letter 470: A fragmentary letter preserves complaints over money, clothing, and Alexandria.

The start of this letter is badly damaged, and only pieces of Claudius Terentianus's complaint survive. Someone is to send the things through a partly lost name and through Asullus. Another man came to him and began asking him for something; the details are broken away. A military belt appears in the surviving line, and Heraclides is named soon after. Terentianus says, in effect, that he will follow that man and come to him if he can, but the middle of the sentence has been lost. What remains preserves enough to show anger and abuse: someone was cursing both Terentianus and Tiberianus. He then speaks of a brother and of help that was or should have been given. Terentianus says that he asked for an aureus for clothing. A linen garment is mentioned, but the surrounding words are gone. He says that his mother had given birth elsewhere, and that someone would speak to his father until he wrote back to Tiberianus. He asks for a reply, and the letter turns again toward Alexandria and people going on to a discharge or assignment. He asks Tiberianus to write back so that he can feel secure. He says that out of one hundred denarii he has thirty-five; the rest, he says, are Tiberianus's. The remaining lines are too broken to reconstruct safely, but they include a journey, money, and his closing wish that Tiberianus be well.
