Letter 30: Chrysostom asks Hortius for health updates and describes the desolation and danger of Cucusus.

I wanted to receive a letter from your honor telling us about your health, for you know how we have always felt toward your Reverence, most honored master. Since perhaps the scarcity of letter-carriers deprived you of that chance, we, having met people traveling to your Reverence, hastened first to write to your honor. We ask you, whenever it is permitted, to write to us continually yourself and tell us about your health. We live in a place more desolate than nearly the whole inhabited world around us. We are besieged by fear of robbers, and in such great loneliness we endure many afflictions as if in a foreign land. Yet if we often receive letters from those who love us, telling us about their health, we will draw much comfort even in such circumstances. You know how great the power of love is, and that not only the presence of those who love us but also their letters bring great comfort. Knowing this, be generous to us with this joy, and more often tell us the state of your health, which we are so eager to know.

Λʹ. Ἑορτίῳ ἐπισκόπῳ. Ἐγὼ μὲν ἐπεθύμουν καὶ γράμματα δέξασθαι τῆς σῆς τιμιότητος περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς σῆς ἡμῖν δηλοῦντα. Οἶσθα γὰρ ὅπως ἀεὶ περὶ τὴν σὴν διετέθημεν εὐλάβειαν, δέσποτα τιμιώτατε. Ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ τοῦτο ἴσως τῶν γραμματηφόρων ὑμᾶς περιείλετο ἡ σπάνις, ἡμεῖς, ἐπιτυχόντες τῶν πρὸς τὴν σὴν εὐλάβειαν ἀφικνουμένων, πρότεροι τοῖς γράμμασιν ἐπεπηδήσαμεν τοῖς πρὸς τὴν σὴν τιμιότητα, καί σε παρακαλοῦμεν, ἡνίκα ἂν ἐξῇ, καὶ αὐτὸν συνεχῶς ἡμῖν ἐπιστέλλειν, καὶ περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς σῆς δηλοῦν. Οἰκοῦμεν γὰρ χωρίον ἐρημότατον, καὶ πάσης τῆς καθ' ἡμᾶς οἰκουμένης ἐρημότερον· πολιορκούμεθα καὶ φόβῳ λῃστῶν, καὶ πολλὰς ὡς ἐν ἀλλοτρίᾳ καὶ ἐν τοσαύτῃ ἐρημίᾳ θλίψεις ὑπομένομεν· πλὴν ἐὰν ὑμῶν τῶν σφόδρα ἡμᾶς ἀγαπώντων πυκνῶς ἐπιτυγχάνωμεν γραμμάτων τὰ περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς ὑμετέρας δηλούντων, πολλὴν καὶ ἐν τοσαύταις περιστάσεσιν ὄντες καρπωσόμεθα παράκλησιν. Οἶσθα γὰρ ὅση ἀγάπης δύναμις, καὶ ὡς οὐ παρουσία τῶν φιλούντων μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ γράμματα πολλὴν φέρει τὴν παραμυθίαν. Ταῦτ' οὖν εἰδὼς ἐπιδαψιλεύου ταύτην ἡμῖν τὴν εὐφροσύνην, συνεχέστερον τὰ περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς σῆς δηλῶν, περὶ ἧς μάλιστα περισπούδαστον ἡμῖν μανθάνειν.
