10 To Magnulf, the brother of Lupus How swiftly Rumor flies, roused on her nimble wings, and fills every place, enlarged by your deeds! For though the Rhine is near to you, and the Loire, behold, is near to me, here, Magnulf, you give pleasure, comely and great in your honor. Thus the trumpet of the herald Sigimund, once sent forth, has run its course, so that your good qualities are made known in a place far and wide. Yet the letter, in its brief words, scarcely marks this out: not because it sings everything, nor because it wishes to keep silent. Foremost, powerful in the lawgiving with a torrent of discourse, you so govern that you call back the deeds of old by new ones, in whose offices, by the plow of a just cultivator, with the seed of justice your people reap the harvest of their prayers. No one lacks what is his own, no one settles upon what belongs to another: thus you act so that the people have no leisure to be guilty. Your solicitude brings to the rest the gifts of well-being, and the toil of one man becomes the rest of many. So that, gracious one, you may be called by all impartial and harmonious, here a judge by the laws, here a parent by your goodness. Grant pardon for these few words, since the carrier presses upon me: for the great matter concerning the brother of Lupus prompts me to speak.
