Pope Pelagius to Bishop Agnellus [bishop of Ravenna]. [The opening of the letter is lost; only fragments of sections four through six survive.] ... [those who, persisting] in schism, have professed not to maintain unity. But lest you should perhaps inquire about the length of time you ought to allow them once our present commission has been made known to them, know that the span of ten days which I [Pelagius] received from Celestine of blessed memory [Pope Celestine I]—he whose doctrines and associates these men here are defending, namely Nestorius—has also been reserved for these men. Within that span, if they refuse to restore themselves to Catholic unity, let them, by the authority of the apostolic see, as has been said, be punished without hesitation by the sentence of your Fraternity as set forth above. [...] The law of the empire denies all force to any payment of which a man has fraudulently gained possession from his sovereign.
