Letter 54

To the same person. Unless it be on account of the killing of Christ that all Judaea has been laid waste by the Romans, and that strangers to the Hebrews now devour it and reap its fruits, then the Prophet must have lied when he proclaimed this a thousand years before [a reference to the prophetic foretelling of Judaea's desolation].

Εἰ μὴ διὰ τὴν Χριστοκτονίαν ἠρήμωται πᾶσα Ἰουδαία ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίων, καὶ ἀλλότριοι Ἑβραίων κατεσθίουσιν καὶ καρπίζονται ταύτην, ἐψεύσθω ὁ Προφήτης πρὸ χιλίων τοῦτο ἀνακηρύξας ἐτῶν.
