Letter 232

To the same person. "Praise him," it says, "with strings and with the instrument" [Psalm 150:4]. The strings are many, composed together in harmony, and each one set musically in its own place, the many of them. These are the commandments of God, and the accounts concerning many matters, which have no discord with one another; and the instrument that comprehends all of these is the Christ-loving soul of the wise man.

« Αἰνεῖτε αὐτόν, φησίν, ἐν χορδαῖς, καὶ ὀργάνῳ. » Χορδαὶ πλείους ἁρμονίως συντεθειμέναι, καὶ μουσικῶς ἑκάστη ἐν οἰκείᾳ χώρᾳ τεταγμένη, αἱ πολλαὶ. Α εἰσιν ἐντολαὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τὰ περὶ πλειόνων διη- ματα, οὐδεμίαν ἔχοντα πρὸς ἄλληλα διαφωνίαν· ὄργανον δὲ τούτων πάντων περιεκτικόν ἐστιν ἡ φι- λόχριστος τοῦ σοφοῦ ψυχή.
