Letter 538: Gaudentius shares with me the work of teaching the young.

To Andronicus. (356/57) Gaudentius shares with us the work that concerns the young men. This Arabius here also has family of his own there, who are poorer than their worth deserves. Knowing, then, that you are a friend of mine, and one who takes thought for his own people, while having the authority to lay commands upon me, he moves you through me to come to the aid of Antiochus and Alexander. Of these two, the one is a relation of his by marriage, the other his nephew; the one wholly destitute, the other a young man in straitened circumstances. The wrongs they suffer you will learn from them directly; and by undoing the evil for them you will both confirm the laws, for which, I think, you care most of all, and you will gratify us as well by the very same act.

(356/57) Γαυδέντιος ἡμῖν κοινωνεῖ τῶν περὶ τοὺς νέους Ἀράβιος δὲ οὑτοσὶ καὶ ἔστιν αὐτῷ γένος ἐκεῖ, πενόμενοι παρὰ τὴν ἀξίαν. γνοὺς οὖν ὡς εἴης μοι φίλος καὶ τῶν μὲν οἰκείων φροντίζων, ἐμοὶ δὲ ἐπιτάττειν ἔχων, κινεῖ σε δι’ ἐμοῦ βοηθεῖν Ἀντιόχῳ τε καὶ Ἀλεξάνδρῳ. τούτοιν δὲ ὁ μὶν αὐτῷ κηδεστής, ὁ δὲ ἀδελφιδοῦς, ὁ μὲν ἄπορος παντελῶς, ὁ δὲ ἐν ἀπορίᾳ νέος. ἃ μὶν οὖν ἀδικοῦνται, παρ’ αὐτῶν εἴσῃ· λύσας δὲ αὐτοῖς τὸ κακὸν τοὺς νόμους τε βεβαιώσεις, ὧν, οἶμαι, σοὶ μάλιστα μέλει, καὶ ἡμῖν ἐκ τῶν αὐτῶν χαριῇ.
