To Alypius. (358) For the greatness of your office I count you fortunate, but for the virtue with which you govern I praise you. And I say that this is a gain for our discipline [rhetoric], from which you have the knowledge of how to govern, since if that knowledge comes from learning, and learning comes from her, then the pupil is an adornment to the teacher who taught him; and far fairer would the recompense for his rearing become for her, if you would bestow your care upon her, having been allotted to govern her. But this we shall demand of Fortune, and she will indeed grant it, if she does what is just; and as for Hierocles, we are rearing him for you to be in no way better than his father, but perhaps equal to his father. And yet the young man's zeal is divided between his tongue and the work of his hand, but nevertheless he is keen in both; of which the one I myself report to others, and the other I hear about from others.

Ἀλυπίῳ. (358) Διὰ μὲν τὸ μέγεθος τῆς ἀρχῆς εὐδαιμονίζω σε, διὰ δὲ τὴν ἀρετὴν μεθ’ ἧς ἄρχεις ἐπαινῶ. καί φημι μὲν τοῦτο κέρ- σος εἶναι τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ, παρ’ ἧς ἔχεις τὸ ἐπίστασθαι ἄρχειν, εἴπερ ἀπὸ μὲν τῶν λόγων ἐκεῖνο, παρὰ δὲ ταύτης οἱ λόγοι, τῇ διδαξάσῃ δὲ κόσμος ὁ μαθών, πολὸ δ’ ἂν αὐτῇ καλλίω τὰ τροφεῖα γενέσθαι, εἰ τὴν πρόνοιαν εἰς αὐτὴν καταθεῖο λαχὼν ἄρχειν αὐτῆς. ἀλλὰ τοῦτο μὲν ἀπαιτήσομεν τὴν Τύχην, καὶ δώσει γε, ἂν τὰ δίκαια ποιῇ· τὸν δ’ Ἱεροκλέα σοι τρέφομεν ἀμείνω μὲν ἥκιστα τοῦ πατρός, ἴσον δὲ ἴσως τῷ πα- τρί. καίτοι σχίζεταί γε ἡ σπουδὴ τῷ νέῳ περί τε τὴν γλῶτταν καὶ τὸ τῆς χειρὸς ἔργον, ἀλλ’ ὅμως ἐστὶν ὀξὺς ἀμφότερα, ὧν τὸ μὲν ἄλλοις ἐγὼ λέγω, τὸ δὲ παρ’ ἄλλων ἀκούω.
