Of the Emperor Honorius to Arcadius Augustus. That he order a synod to assemble at Thessalonica, and that he command Theophilus to betake himself there. This is now the third time I write to your mildness, deeply concerned about those things which by collusion were done against John, bishop of Constantinople, and which, as it appears, have not yet been brought to completion. Wherefore I have written again through these bishops and presbyters, greatly anxious for the peace of the Church, through which our empire too obtains peace; that you may deign to order the bishops of the East to convene at Thessalonica. For indeed our bishops of the West, having chosen men who know not how to swerve toward evil and falsehood, have sent five bishops, two presbyters, and one deacon of the great church of the Romans, whom I would wish you to deem worthy of every honor; so that, if it be proved to them that John was lawfully expelled, they may teach me to withdraw from communion with him; or if they convict the bishops of the East of acting from a depraved disposition of mind, [you may] turn yourself away from communion with them.
