Letter 9234: I will not conceal my relief and joy.

Upon receiving the letters of our brother and fellow-bishop Marinianus, and likewise upon the return of Caetorius our chartulary [archivist], we have learned that your Fraternity has most fully satisfied us concerning those matters about which there had been doubt; and we render thanks to Almighty God, because from the very marrow of my heart all rancor of unfavorable suspicion has been rooted out. For this reason I wished to release our common son Stephen, your deacon, with the utmost speed. But the frequent pains of my infirmities compelled this man to linger with me for a few days. Yet after I began to grow even a little better, I took care at once to send him back to you with joy. And so we have transmitted, according to custom, the pallium to be used in the sacred solemnities of the Masses, of which we wish you to vindicate the character in all things. For the honor of this garment is humility and justice. With your whole mind, therefore, let your Fraternity hasten to show itself humble in prosperity, and, when adversities sometimes occur, upright with justice; a friend to the good, opposed to the perverse; never accepting anyone's person against the truth, never suppressing anyone who speaks for the truth; persisting in works of mercy according to the strength of your means, and yet desiring to persist even beyond your strength; having compassion on the weak, rejoicing together with the well-disposed, counting another's losses as your own, exulting in another's joys as in your own; severe in correcting vices, soothing the spirit of your hearers in fostering virtues; in anger holding judgment without anger, yet in tranquility not abandoning the censure of its severity. This, dearest brother, is the meaning of the pallium you have received; and if you keep it carefully, you will hold within what you have shown yourself to have received without. Moreover, I commend our brother and fellow-bishop Savinianus to your Fraternity in all things; and if there are any cases [against him], let them be postponed for the time being. Let charity remain fixed between you, so that thus, if a dispute ever arises over external matters, an examination may proceed in such a way that it does not abandon a mind set on charity. We also commend our common son Honoratus the archdeacon. Concerning whom, if it is as we have learned through Caetorius our chartulary, that through him three archdeacons before now were compelled, after completing five years, to depart from preserving the ecclesiastical custom, we wish indeed that he may find your charity holy. For judgment ought not to be demanded concerning a case which he himself has judged. But if it is not so, then, with every swelling of mind suppressed and all hatred set aside, he ought to be received in charity and in no way removed from the place in which he was found. We have also confidently given Messianus, a cleric who had fled to us, to our common son Stephen the deacon, being certain that, since we transmit to your Fraternity the man whom we transmit, you can show toward him not hatred but favor. May Almighty God guard you with His protection and grant us so to act that, after the fleeting fruits of this temporal life, we may be worthy to come together to the joys of eternity.
