Letter 183: Chrysostom asks Hesychius of Salona to keep helping the wounded eastern churches.

Although a great stretch of road separates us from your Honor, and although we are settled at the very edges of the inhabited world, love has wings. It makes even such journeys light and easy. Through it we are near you, we are with you, and we send the greeting owed by letter. I urge you to show the care that fits the churches throughout the East. You know how great the reward is for stretching out a hand to suffering churches, turning such disturbance into calm, and ending so fierce a war. I do not write as though you needed reminding, since you had already done what you could before our letter came. But since the terrible things have not yet been resolved and are still at their height, do not draw back or lose heart. As long as wounds keep crushing the body of the church, keep applying the remedies that lie in your power.

ΡΠΓʹ. Ἡσυχίῳ ἐπισκόπῳ Σαλώνων. Εἰ καὶ πολλῷ διειργόμεθα τῷ τῆς ὁδοῦ μήκει τῆς τιμιότητός σου, καὶ πρὸς αὐτάς ἐσμεν τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰς ἐσχατιὰς ἀπῳκισμένοι, ἀλλ' ὅμως τῷ τῆς ἀγάπης πτερῷ χρώμενοι, κούφῳ τε ὄντι, καὶ ῥᾳδίας τὰς τοιαύτας ἀποδημίας ἐργαζομένῳ, πλησίον τέ σού ἐσμεν, καὶ σύνεσμέν σοι, καὶ τὴν ὀφειλομένην τῶν γραμμάτων ἀποδιδόαμεν πρόσρησιν, καί σε παρακαλοῦμεν τὴν προσήκουσαν ὑπὲρ τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τῶν κατὰ τὴν Ἀνατολὴν ποιήσασθαι σπουδήν. Καὶ ταῦτα οὐχ ὡς δεομένους ὑμᾶς τῆς παρ' ἡμῶν ὑπομνήσεως παρακαλοῦμεν· καὶ γὰρ καὶ πρὸ τῶν ἡμετέρων γραμμάτων τὰ παρ' ὑμῶν αὐτοὶ πεποιήκατε· ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ οὐδέπω τὰ δεινὰ λέλυται, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀκμάζει, ἀξιοῦμεν ὑμᾶς μὴ ἀναπεσεῖν, μηδὲ περικακῆσαι, ἀλλ' ἕως μένει τὰ ἕλκη τὸ σῶμα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας συντρίβοντα, καὶ τὰ παρ' ὑμῶν φάρμακα ἐπιτιθέναι· καὶ γὰρ ὅσῳ μετὰ πλειόνων πόνων ἀνύεται τὰ προκείμενα, τοσούτῳ πλείων ὑμῖν κείσεται καὶ ὁ μισθός.
